VISUAL Sensemaking

JOURNEY MAP / VISUAL SENSEMAKING FOR

Connect the Networks

3-Day Conference on Alternative Sanitation
November 4–7, 2023, in Zurich

New sanitation solutions are on their way!

An amazing assembly of actors, makers, thinkers around circular sanitation alternatives! Yes, nutrients from our pee and poop are valuable and can and should be recycled without using drinking water. :)

The first large gathering of resource-oriented sanitation (ROS) umbrella associations from Germany/Austria, Switzerland and France. Zurich, Switzerland | November 2023. A 3-day long visual sensemaking for the first convergence of the resource oriented sanitation networks: @netsan_verein (Germany/Austria), @valoo_ch (Switzerland) and RAE (France) in Zürich in early November.

Digital Graphic Recording

“Community Experiences
with racism and prejudice”

Digital graphic recording of community dialogue on experiences with racism and prejudice. November 29th, 2023

This event was about fostering conversations and connection between people from diverse cultural backgrounds living in Nanaimo and explicitly speaking about the more difficult experiences. The event started with a welcome, followed by an opening speech, prayer and circle ceremony by Snuneymuxw First Nation Elders.

Hosted by Central Vancouver Island Multi Cultural Society and Resilience BC on the lands of the Snuneymuxw People.

Nanaimo, November 27th, 2023

On HOW the content WAS CAPTURED and SHARED:

The conversations were held at several round tables with each about 7 people (World Cafe Method). University students form the VIU Master of Community Planning Program helped as facilitators moderating each table with prompting questions. Each table had a note taker capturing the key points and sharing them in an online whiteboard, which was tracked by my dear volunteer assistant Julika who created different sticky notes that helped remember what information has been transferred to the image yet.
Every 20 min the visual was updated on a digital screen and a moderator led the groups into a new focus topic. It took me about 2,5 hours for post-production and 1 hour of communication and visual work for formal adjustments requested by the clients.

In the picture: My personal “informant” Julika filtering the information coming in from all the tables and putting key words on sticky notes for me to browse through.

Workshop duration: ~3hours from 9:30am – 1pm, including a lunch break.

GRASSROOTS
TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATIONS
FOR AGROECOLOGY ASSEMBLY

October 18–21, 2023 – ITALY

Format: 3-day long Unconference

Presenting the visual at a working group and data governance in agriculture at the Civil Society and Indigenous Peoples Mechanism Forum at the UN Food and Agriculture in Rome, in October 2023

A first-time gathering of representatives of hands-on farming projects that use decentralized technologies. Around 25 in-situ participants with ~10 online participants. The contents were defined and emerged over the course of the week by the participants. Very creative facilitation techniques were used for exploring, understanding and deciding together effectively.

The artwork was used as a talking piece for advocating for grassroots technologies in agriculture at the CSIPM (Civil Society and Indigenous Peoples Mechanism) Forum at the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations) in Rome on the fourth day. It served as a reference for the working groups on data governance in agriculture.

Generative Scribings for
”Think & Sense” Calls

Generative Scribing | Think & Sense Calls digitally with iPad via Zoom and in person. May – October 2023

Resource-oriented Sanitation

LOO:TOPIA GARTEN | re:publica Conference Berlin June 5–7, 2023 |
Visual Sensemaking | roughly 12hours per scribing

All three scribings from the three days merged into one long format.
Left to right: Day 2, Day 1, Day 3. They were reordered to match the journey of identifying a problem (the true cost of sanitation), to needs and ideas for solutions, to first implementation examples to socio-cultural acceptance on the larger scale, to application of the final fertilizer product (humus and aurine) in agriculture and the open questions that remain from that regarding long-term effects on soil and the food chain. | Information depicted was approved by PhD Ariane Krause, ZirkulierBAR and the panelists that were part of the conversations.

Above: Day 1: Sustainable Pee:Radise

A remotely drawn visual sensemaking incorporating talks and conversations from a conference on implementing sustainable sanitation. The Loo:topia Garten was part of the re:publica conference, June 5–7, 2023 in Berlin.

Synthesis of three panel talks per day.

Thank you Ariane Krause and her team aner everyone else who helped in putting together this amazing conference on such relevant topic! > ZirkulierBAR – multi-stakeholder project on regional nutrient circulation in Eberswalde, Germany: https://zirkulierbar.de/das-projekt/

#VisualSensemaking

Day 2: Toilets for Everyone / The true Costs of Sanitation / Need-oriented sanitation and public toilets

Day 3 Acceptance | Implementation | Fertilizer Products | Land Application | Open Questions

These scribings are complimentary to Joanna Mitchell’s graphic recordings, which were done for each session and contained more details and a more personal angle.

VISUAL SENSEMAKING for RIEP FOrum

April 25–27, 2023 | At The Haven on Gabriola Island, BC, Canada.

Visual Sensemaking for the RIEP Forum 2023. A three-day Unconference by the Rural Islands Economic Partnership to create connection, offer space for reflection and synthesize this into action. A strong focus on creating economic, social and ecological resilience among and around the needs of rural islands in the Salish Sea.

TESTIMONIALS:

As the MC and part of the core team for this event, I would say Jenni’s work lifted this conference significantly. It gave people a centre point for their conversations and captured the imaginative possibilities of new paradigms and directions for rural island culture and life.
— Mitch Miyagawa, Professional Facilitator and Event Organizer

“The ‘sensemaking’ work of artist Jenni is brilliant!”

“Jenni was present 10 hours a day absorbing the energy and content of the 2 and one-half day program. She listened, she inquired and she created. Watching Jenni work was like seeing the essence of the Forum unfold in magical ways. Her attention to detail, precision, use of colour and her patience with the process was a privilege to watch. Jenni clearly loves sense-making. She was an absolute pleasure to work with and RIEP would definitely engage with her again.”

“The Forum brought over 120 people together from across the 18+rural islands of British Columbia, Canada, to address the socio-economic challenges and opportunities facing these unique communities.”

— Francine Carlin, Board Chair and Interim Executive Director for
Rural Islands Economic Partnership (RIEP)

EARTH DAY 2023
Adaptive Cycle for Resilience
by Holling & Gunderson

For our SEED Agrihood Neighborhood Earth Day Celebration I created a visual to conextualize where we are at in the natural process of renewal that can be found at different scales of systems: as an ecosystem asuch as a forest or as an individual human experience with our psychology, going through dark nights of the soul and reorganizing ourselves, growing, learning, stabilizing and feeling okay, until the next disturbance comes, be it through surpressed emotions or outside impacts, we move into the phase of crisis and chaos.

The goal is to learn how to do these loops in smaller scales so the disturbances are not so massive as to eliminate the whole system at once, but keep the system as a whole more flexible in reacting to changes and bouncing back from disturbances. If the system is too resilient and doesn’t adapt enough eventually it will stay in the conservation phase too long and get stuck in the rigidity trap, unable to move flexible and adapt quickly.

Regular renewal at different levels and scales can help prevent such major disruptions to life. Now what would you say where are you at in this cycle? You may be in different parts of the cycle depending on what aspect of your life you are looking at: work, relationship to friends, parents, community?

Where do you think we are at as a larger organism as society?

Systems Scribing
for Building THE Citizen Network Together Conference

Jan – Feb, 2022

The images were created in parallel to a Systems Modelling Workshop given by Christoph Hinske (Asc. Prof. at Saxion University & The Engagement Company). They were supposed to add a more figurative layer. The sketches were made during the session and refining of images (coloring, placement) happened after the 60min workshop.

After the three sessions Christoph had created a merged systems modell that contained the views of all three groups.

The event was developed and hosted by Sebastian Lins and Julia Finkenzeller, students at the Centre for Economics and Ecosystem Management Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development, over 3 lively and very informative days.
